Sleep apnea testing in Canada: symptoms, assessment and requisitions
A practical adult guide to possible sleep-apnea symptoms, home and laboratory sleep tests, what to prepare, and when to seek urgent care.

The short answer: can you request a sleep test online?
An adult physically located in a province served by MedVibe can request a private online assessment for possible sleep apnea. A licensed physician or nurse practitioner, depending on the province, service, scope of practice and availability, reviews the information and decides what next step is clinically appropriate. That may be a home sleep test, a laboratory sleep study, an in-person examination, another referral, or no test at this time.
The MedVibe assessment costs CAD $150 and is tax-exempt. Payment covers the clinical assessment, not a guaranteed requisition, test, diagnosis, treatment, acceptance by a sleep clinic, equipment, or result. Fees from a laboratory, sleep clinic or equipment provider are separate.
1. Symptoms worth discussing
Sleep apnea causes repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. People often do not notice the pauses themselves; a bed partner may be the first person to observe loud snoring followed by silence, gasping, or choking. Snoring alone does not establish sleep apnea.
- Loud or disruptive snoring, especially with silent pauses.
- Witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping, or choking during sleep.
- Excessive daytime sleepiness or falling asleep unintentionally.
- Morning headaches, poor concentration, memory problems, or irritability.
- High blood pressure or other relevant heart and metabolic conditions.
- Drowsy-driving, work-safety, or near-miss concerns.
These symptoms have several possible causes. An online questionnaire or symptom list can support an assessment, but it cannot replace clinical judgment or the testing needed to confirm a diagnosis.
2. What to prepare for the assessment
- A description of your sleep schedule and how rested you feel in the morning.
- Observations from a bed partner, if available, including pauses or gasping.
- Your medication list, alcohol or sedative use, and relevant medical history.
- Known blood-pressure, heart, lung, neurological, or previous sleep-test information.
- Your province and physical location at the time of care.
- The requirements of a sleep clinic or insurer if you already contacted one.
Do not stop a prescribed medication or begin a sleep-apnea treatment on the basis of an online article. Bring your questions to the clinician. If a requisition is issued and accepted, follow the testing service’s instructions.
3. Home sleep testing
A home cardio-respiratory sleep test uses sensors while you sleep at home. It may record breathing, oxygen level, snoring and body position. It is more limited than a complete laboratory study and is not the right test for every symptom pattern or medical situation.
A clinician or sleep service decides whether a home test is suitable. A technically unsuccessful home test, an unclear result, or a more complex presentation may lead to laboratory testing or another in-person assessment.
4. Laboratory polysomnography
A full polysomnography is performed overnight in a sleep laboratory. In addition to breathing and oxygen signals, it can record sleep stages, brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity and other measures. This broader information can help evaluate sleep apnea and other sleep disorders when a full study is indicated.
The appropriate test depends on the clinical question, your health history, local referral rules and the accepting service. MedVibe does not operate the sleep laboratory and cannot promise its eligibility criteria, wait time or acceptance.
5. What happens after testing?
The testing service or clinician interprets the result in context. A result may support a diagnosis, require clarification, or point to another issue. Treatment options depend on the type and severity of the condition, symptoms, safety risks and personal medical history. Do not purchase equipment or assume that a specific treatment is appropriate before the result is reviewed.
6. Insurance and receipts
MedVibe provides a receipt for a paid consultation. Reimbursement may be possible through private, workplace, student, health-spending or travel coverage, but every plan has its own definitions and documentation rules. Sleep testing and equipment may be assessed separately. Ask the plan whether a private virtual clinical assessment, the proposed test and any equipment are eligible before you book or purchase them.
Can this be handled online?
Online care may be a fit for a routine question, renewal, or document request when you can safely wait for clinician review.
Choose in-person or urgent care if you may need an exam, testing, or immediate treatment. Call 911 for an emergency.
