Before you act
Your Ontario prescriber retired: what happens to your refills?
Ask your pharmacy to check the prescription, the prescriber’s registration status and your continuity options. If a new clinical decision is needed, gather your records and seek an assessment before your supply runs low.

A recent Ontario question highlights a detail many people would miss: refills showing on a pharmacy record may not be dispensable after the prescriber leaves practice. Their professional registration status can matter, and closing an office does not always mean registration has ended. A short call now can give you a clearer plan before your supply becomes a worry.

A closed office and inactive registration are different
The Ontario College of Pharmacists explains that someone may leave a practice while keeping active registration for a period to support patients’ transition. Once registration becomes inactive and the care relationship has ended, remaining refills are generally considered invalid. The pharmacist still assesses the prescription and circumstances case by case. A broad announcement or a number printed on the label cannot settle your individual situation. This is Ontario guidance; other provinces have their own rules.
Make the pharmacy your first call
Ask what is actually on file, whether the prescriber’s status affects the remaining refills, and whether the pharmacist can consider a continuity measure after assessment. Ontario guidance says a pharmacist may renew under their own authority, direct someone to another prescriber, or choose another appropriate course based on the case. None is automatic. Mention if your supply is running low so you can get situation-specific advice; do not change your treatment to stretch it.
Prepare for care with a new professional
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario expects physicians closing a practice to take reasonable steps to facilitate ongoing care, with the steps shaped by patient need and available resources. Ask the office about a successor, interim coverage and how to access your records. For a new assessment, bring a current medication list, a label photo or prescription copy, pharmacy details, allergies, recent health changes and any relevant monitoring or results. Some medicines require closer monitoring or an in-person examination.
Where a MedVibe request may fit
An adult physically in Ontario with an established treatment and an active or recently expired prescription can request a MedVibe renewal assessment by a licensed clinician. The service-specific questionnaire is available online. A clinician decides whether more information, an in-person examination or another path is needed; the clinical decision and timing remain uncertain. If the pharmacy can resolve the issue directly, an additional private consultation may be unnecessary.
This guide cannot determine whether a particular prescription remains valid or whether a medicine can be renewed remotely. If an interruption is near, your health has changed or the medicine needs special monitoring, contact the pharmacy or a health professional promptly. For non-urgent guidance in Ontario, call Health811; in Quebec, Info-Santé 811 can help direct you. For an immediate danger or medical emergency, call 911.
Can this be handled online?
Online care may be a fit for a routine question, renewal, or document request when you can safely wait for clinician review.
Choose in-person or urgent care if you may need an exam, testing, or immediate treatment. Call 911 for an emergency.
