Quebec college or university absence: do you need a medical note?

The under-five-day rule

Four questions to ask before looking for an appointment

Ask for the written policy, the exact dates involved, the document type and the deadline. Also check whether a self-declaration or non-medical proof is enough. Report the absence through your course or institution’s normal channel even when a medical note cannot be required. These questions can prevent an unnecessary paid assessment or a document that does not match the school’s process.

What a clinical assessment can actually support

When documentation is genuinely required, a clinician must work from what can be assessed accurately: the visit date, the available facts and any relevant functional impact. The document does not decide whether the institution grants a deferred exam, extension or accommodation.
