How to renew a prescription without a family doctor in Quebec

Start with your pharmacist, then arrange a clinical assessment if an extension is not possible or your health has changed. (Read more)

Losing access to a family doctor does not mean you should wait until the last dose to look for a plan. In Quebec, your pharmacy is often the most useful first call: a pharmacist can review the file and may be able to extend a prescription in some situations. If clinical reassessment is needed, the primary-care access point, a clinic or a virtual visit may be the next step.

Call the pharmacy before refills run out

Ask how much remains on the prescription and whether an extension can be considered. The Ordre des pharmaciens du Québec says a pharmacist may sometimes extend treatment to prevent an interruption, subject to professional judgment and applicable rules. It is not automatic: the medication, time elapsed, health changes, interactions and monitoring needs all matter.

Bring the information that makes review useful

Have the medication name and labelled dose, how you take it, the last prescription date, other medications and supplements, and your pharmacy details. Report side effects, changing symptoms, possible pregnancy, new allergies or recent results. Do not wait until you have none left, and do not change the treatment on your own.

If the pharmacy cannot extend it

People without a family doctor can review options through Quebec’s Primary Care Access Point, including 811 option 3. A clinical visit may also be needed when an examination, vital signs, tests or chronic-disease follow-up are relevant. The route depends on the medication and your condition; a virtual visit may lead to an in-person recommendation.

When a MedVibe request may fit

A person located in Ontario or Quebec can submit a prescription-refill request for clinical review. Provide an accurate medication list and preferred pharmacy. The request is an assessment step: it does not mean a prescription, renewal, specific quantity or service acceptance will follow.

Seek timely care if symptoms worsen, a significant reaction occurs or interruption may pose a risk. For a non-urgent concern, call 811; for breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, severe chest pain or another emergency, call 911.

This article is for general information and does not replace an assessment by a qualified clinician. A clinician decides whether a prescription, note, requisition, or treatment plan is appropriate for you.

Can this be handled online?

Online care may be a fit for a routine question, renewal, or document request when you can safely wait for clinician review.

Choose in-person or urgent care if you may need an exam, testing, or immediate treatment. Call 911 for an emergency.
