Flu vaccination: what should you check before planning an autumn appointment?

Before booking, check the vaccination location, possible fees and information to bring. Prepare your questions about your health and the vaccinations recommended for your circumstances.

Seasonal influenza returns each year, while vaccine composition and campaign arrangements can change. In Canada, flu vaccination is generally recommended every fall for people aged six months and older who do not have a contraindication. Vaccination locations, booking methods and eligibility for public programs vary by province.

Before booking, check the vaccination location, possible fees and information to bring. Prepare your questions about your health and the vaccinations recommended for your circumstances.

Check the location, fees and booking process

Start with your province’s official vaccination page or your pharmacy. Confirm the ages accepted, appointment availability, vaccine offered and possible fees. In Quebec, the government’s page explains eligibility for free vaccination and links to booking through Clic Santé. A vaccination recommendation does not mean every product is available everywhere or that everyone is covered by the same program.

Prepare your records and questions

Keep your vaccination record available. Note significant previous vaccine reactions, relevant allergies, your medications and questions already raised with a health professional. If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or have questions about a vaccine suited to your age, tell the professional providing the vaccination. They can explain what applies to your circumstances.

Allow time for protection to develop

Protection is not immediate: it generally takes about two weeks for the vaccine to provide its best protection. If you want to coordinate several vaccinations, ask the vaccination provider. The product and recommendations that apply to you depend in part on your age and health.

If you are sick on the day of your appointment

If you have cold or flu symptoms, contact the vaccination site before travelling there. The team can explain what to do next. Do not assume the appointment should automatically go ahead or be cancelled.

Where does a MedVibe consultation fit?

To receive a vaccine, book directly with a vaccination provider. If you have a personal, non-urgent medical question, an eligible adult located in a province MedVibe serves can request a consultation when virtual care is appropriate. The clinician determines suitable recommendations. A virtual consultation and administration of a vaccine are separate services.

When to seek care

Serious trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion or rapidly worsening illness needs urgent help: call 911 or go to an emergency department. For a non-urgent health question in Quebec, Info-Santé 811, option 1, can help you find appropriate care.

This article is for general information and does not replace an assessment by a qualified clinician. A clinician decides whether a prescription, note, requisition, or treatment plan is appropriate for you.

Can this be handled online?

Online care may be a fit for a routine question, renewal, or document request when you can safely wait for clinician review.

Choose in-person or urgent care if you may need an exam, testing, or immediate treatment. Call 911 for an emergency.
