Before you act

Flu arrives early in Quebec: when should you book an online consultation?

Fever, cough and body aches: an online consultation can help assess non-urgent symptoms and identify the next step. Treatment depends on your circumstances and the clinician’s judgment.

Flu activity has arrived early in Quebec this fall. INSPQ’s report for the week ending October 24, 2026 shows roughly 5% positivity for influenza A and B. Last season, that level was not exceeded until week 47—a five-week difference. These figures describe laboratory testing, not the percentage of Quebec residents who are infected.

What an online consultation can help with

If your condition is stable and you can safely wait for an assessment, MedVibe lets you discuss your symptoms with a licensed clinician. They can review how your illness has changed, your health history and medications, then decide whether advice, treatment, testing or an in-person examination is appropriate. Flu symptoms can resemble COVID-19 and other infections: a video call cannot distinguish every cause. The service is available to eligible adults aged 18 and older who are physically located in a province MedVibe serves.

Antibiotics: when a bacterial infection warrants them

Influenza is caused by a virus, so antibiotics do not treat the flu itself. They may be appropriate if a clinician suspects or confirms an associated bacterial infection, such as certain pneumonias. A consultation helps determine appropriate care; an antibiotic prescription is not automatic. Do not use antibiotics left over from an earlier prescription or prescribed for someone else.

Antivirals: why symptom timing matters

An influenza antiviral, such as oseltamivir, may be considered in some circumstances, particularly for people at risk of complications or those who are seriously ill. Treatment generally offers the greatest benefit when started early, ideally within the first 48 hours. Promptly mention pregnancy, immune suppression or a chronic condition. Your physician, nurse practitioner or pharmacist can help you find appropriate care. If more than 48 hours have passed, still seek advice if you are at increased risk or your condition is worsening.

Prepare for a useful consultation

Record the day and time your symptoms began, how they have changed, measured temperatures and medicines already used. Have your medication and allergy lists available. Mention any trouble breathing or drinking. These details help the clinician choose the appropriate next step.

Appropriate care, with clear fees

MedVibe’s general medical consultation costs $150 and is tax-exempt. The fee covers the clinical assessment. Medication, if prescribed, is billed separately by the pharmacy. Any prescription depends on the assessment; some symptoms require an in-person examination. For uncomplicated flu, rest, fluids and measures to ease symptoms may be enough.

When to seek care

Serious trouble breathing, blue lips, intense chest pain, confusion or difficulty staying awake needs urgent care. Call 911 for immediate danger. Do not wait for an online appointment. A fever lasting more than five days or worsening symptoms needs assessment. In Quebec, Info-Santé 811, option 1, can help with non-urgent uncertainty about where to seek care.

This article is for general information and does not replace an assessment by a qualified clinician. A clinician decides whether a prescription, note, requisition, or treatment plan is appropriate for you.

Can this be handled online?

Online care may be a fit for a routine question, renewal, or document request when you can safely wait for clinician review.

Choose in-person or urgent care if you may need an exam, testing, or immediate treatment. Call 911 for an emergency.
