Follow-up after a blood-work request: what happens next

A laboratory requisition starts a process, but it is not a follow-up plan. Before collection, ask who will receive the results, how important findings will be communicated and when to reconnect if you hear nothing. After collection, keep the requisition and instructions, and avoid interpreting an isolated value without clinical context.

Clarify the plan before collection

Ask which tests were requested, whether to follow preparation instructions from the practitioner or laboratory, where to go and who is responsible for follow-up. The CMQ says a practitioner who orders tests must plan continuity and should not simply send the patient elsewhere for results without agreement and transfer of relevant information.

Viewing a result is not the same as interpreting it

Quebec Health Booklet lets eligible users view specimen results. A value marked high or low does not explain its meaning by itself: units, laboratory ranges, test purpose, symptoms, medications and trends matter. Do not change treatment based on a number seen online without a clinical discussion.

Prepare for a useful discussion

Gather the requisition, complete report with units and reference ranges, collection date, symptoms, medications and original question. Note what has changed since the request. Ask which results were expected, what may need another step and who will arrange it. If several professionals are involved, identify the person responsible for follow-up.
